Are testers still necessary?

If the whole team is responsible for quality, do we still need testers in DevOps teams?

Short answer: Yes!

Full answer:

Through testing, especially Test Driven Development, you ensure quality. It is a common misconception that engineers can take on the extra load of an expert tester without losing expertise and velocity. Another misconception is that the word ‘developer’ in Scrum only refers to software engineers. A tester and operations guy are also referred to as a developer in Scrum. The team decides which roles are necessary. People will be T-shaped, so a tester can still be a separate role – most important is that this role does not exist in isolation. The team understands the full value stream and works together to make iterations go live; it shouldn’t be a group of isolated individuals making handovers.
