Agile methods are now widely accepted in organizations and are widely used. In the first “wave”, this means a new way of working: for example with Scrum or Kanban. In the next “wave”, the focus will mainly be on automation. In this automation, or “Continuous Delivery”, the goal is to be able to deploy software at any time. To achieve this, all manual processes must first be fully automated. In practice, the lack of test automation is a common first obstacle to deploying CD. But this is crucial because with automated deployment, a system must first be tested before it can go to production. Because short iterations are part of the Agile way of working, it is not feasible to manually test every iteration every time. Simply because it is too expensive.
